Developing Leaders

Beyond the Field

Sport is the entry point. But what we build at UWSA goes far deeper — discipline, confidence, academic ambition, and a sense of identity rooted in Oromo pride. We develop the whole person.

01
📚

Academic Support

We partner with families to ensure student-athletes stay on track academically. Monthly recognition for honor-roll athletes reinforces that excellence in the classroom carries the same pride as excellence on the field.

  • Homework help & tutoring referrals
  • Monthly academic recognition awards
  • School-to-sport balance coaching
02
🤝

Mentorship & Guidance

Experienced community leaders walk alongside youth through the challenges of adolescence. Our mentors reflect the Oromo cultural identity, giving young people role models who understand their journey.

  • One-on-one mentor matching
  • Oromo community elder involvement
  • Life skills & goal-setting workshops
03
💪

Confidence & Discipline

Sport is our vehicle — but discipline and confidence are our product. From youth to adult programs, we foster the internal strength that athletes carry long after the final whistle.

  • Character-building team culture
  • Leadership roles for senior athletes
  • Public speaking & community voice
04
🧭

Career Pathways

We help older youth and young adults think beyond the next season — exploring education options, career interests, and the transferable skills sport has already given them.

  • Career exploration workshops
  • Resume & interview prep basics
  • College & trade school guidance

"Training the whole person — not just the athlete."

Our Roots

From Oromia to Minnesota

UWSA exists because a community carried its heart across the world. Sport became the thread that kept the Oromo identity alive — on fields across the Twin Cities, the same way it did in the hills of East Africa.

Ethiopia · East Africa

Oromia

Home of the Oromo people — the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. A land of rich tradition, warrior spirit, and community identity stretching back centuries.

02

Diaspora

Through migration and resettlement, the Oromo community carried their culture, language, and values across oceans — preserving identity in new soil.

Minnesota · United States

Twin Cities

Home to one of the largest Oromo diaspora communities in North America. UWSA was born here in 2002 — a gathering point for families, athletes, and generations.

Cultural Foundations

Irreecha

The Oromo thanksgiving festival — celebrated annually as a community through sport, food, and cultural gathering.

Nagaa

Peace and harmony — the foundation of Oromo society. Our programs create spaces where every athlete is welcomed.

Gadaa

The Oromo democratic tradition of age-grade systems. Our youth tiers echo this ancient structure of community development.

Ekeraa

Respect for ancestors and elders. Our senior community members lead, mentor, and guide the next generation of athletes.

A cultural institution as much as a sports academy

UWSA is the living proof that identity, pride, and excellence travel with you — wherever you go.

Our Story

24 Years of Community Pride

Founded in 2002, Uta Wayu Soccer became a cornerstone of the Oromo community — especially families from the Rift Valley of Oromia. For over two decades we have been a symbol of unity, identity, and pride on the fields of the Twin Cities, Minnesota.

Recognizing that many of our children were born and raised in the United States, we evolved into Uta Wayu Sports Academy (UWSA) — expanding beyond adult soccer to offer structured youth pathways across soccer, basketball, and volleyball. In 2024, UWSA Basketball was founded by Minnesota-born youth.
